A Brief History of the Briefcase
By Marcus Chen · August 10, 2025
From Roman legionaries to Wall Street, the briefcase has carried the weight of ambition for two millennia.
By the 19th century, the briefcase as we know it began to take shape. Lawyers and businessmen needed a way to carry papers, and the flat, hard-sided case became the standard.
The 20th century brought the attaché case, with its combination locks and divided interior, a symbol of the postwar professional.
Today, the briefcase has evolved again. Laptops have replaced paper, and soft leather has replaced rigid frames. But the essential purpose remains: to carry what matters, with confidence.
